A Magical Journey to the East
ABOUT THE EXHIBITION:
The exhibition A Magical Journey to the East presents the story of encounters between East and West through history, culture, and art, inspired by the life of Marco Polo. Through three thematic sections, visitors are introduced to the world of medieval travel, the exchange of knowledge and goods, and the lasting legacy of these contacts.
Across these three sections, the exhibition reveals what medieval journeys looked like, what fascinated European travelers in the East, and how knowledge, goods, and customs spread along the Silk Road. Visitors will also discover Yangzhou – the city where Marco Polo once resided as well as a world of innovations that once seemed almost miraculous: paper money, the use of coal, and luxurious textile patterns.
A special highlight is the story of silk, a material that for centuries symbolized power, luxury, and prestige, and which, through trade networks, reached European nobility, including the owners of Trakošćan Castle.
Through engaging illustrations, replicas, and interactive elements, the exhibition invites visitors not only to observe but to become participants in a journey from the past that continues to connect the world today.
The exhibition has been realized in collaboration with the Yangzhou Regional Museum and the Confucius Institute at the University of Zagreb, with the financial support of the Ministry of Culture and Media of the Republic of Croatia.
