The Furniture Collection consists of almost 300 objects, most of which are pieces of furniture in the strict sense (chairs, tables, wardrobes, beds, chests of drawers, armchairs, and so forth), while a smaller portion consists of mounted door decorations, painter’s easels, curtain rails, etc. Furniture plays a significant role in the Trakošćan museum’s permanent exhibition and is indispensable in the forming of the interiors. Its function is twofold: as a presented material – an exhibit – and as an integral part of the ambience, it forms a whole with the space of the castle.

Furniture from the second half of the 19th century is the most represented, as this was when the castle’s rooms were equipped with inventory made to resemble historical styles following its renovation. Historicist sets of furniture modelled after the Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque have been preserved to this day, making up the majority of the furnishings on the upper ground floor and first floor of the castle. The production of this furniture was influenced by Austrian and German design and was entrusted to skilled artisans, resulting in high quality.

On the second floor of the castle, the periods of Baroque, Rococo, Classicism, Biedermeier and Neo-Renaissance are presented. A considerable number of pieces of furniture from earlier periods have enabled the formation of separate spatial units in historical sequence. Here, particular emphasis should be placed on the secretaires and mirrors from the 18th century, the chests and cabinets from the 17th century, while a 16th-century chest of drawers is the oldest piece in the collection.
