The catalogue Women Carry the World tells the story of the strength and role of women through two exhibitions. The first part of the publication is dedicated to the eponymous central exhibition of contemporary photographs by American artist Lekha Singh.
The photographs, taken in India, Tanzania, Morocco, the USA, Mongolia, China, Bhutan, Japan, Kenya, Rwanda and Namibia, illustrate the harsh living conditions of women from different parts of the world. On their heads, shoulders, backs, or in their hands, they carry children, wood, water, food, stones or bundles of cotton. Each, in her own way, bears a part of the world.
The second part features an accompanying exhibition of historical photographs of women carrying burdens, bearing witness to their former difficult position in the traditional, patriarchal and conservative society of this region. The photographs were selected from the collections of three Croatian museums: Trakošćan Castle, the Ethnographic Museum in Zagreb and the Museum of Arts and Crafts, with special emphasis placed on photographs taken by Karlo Dragutin Drašković, one of the pioneers of artistic photography in Croatia.
